Teyana Taylor Debuts ‘Escape Room’ Album and Film Experience
Teyana Taylor has returned with Escape Room, a powerful dual release that arrives as both a full-length album and an original short film via Def Jam Recordings. Designed as a hybrid of sound and cinema, the project unfolds as an immersive exploration of heartbreak, freedom, and renewal.
The film and record feature an impressive roster of collaborators. Musical guests include Jill Scott, Tyla, Lucky Daye, and Kaytranada, while narration comes from Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington, Sarah Paulson, Issa Rae, Regina King, Niecy Nash, Jodie Turner-Smith, La La, and Tash Smith. Taylor’s daughters, Rue Rose and Junie, also appear, bringing a deeply personal layer to the project.
“Escape Room isn’t just a film or an album, it’s a world I built to live in, bleed in, and heal in,” Taylor shared. She described the work as a reflection of loss and brokenness that ultimately points toward resilience and light.
The short film is a noir-inspired, post-apocalyptic love story that Taylor not only stars in but also wrote, directed, and produced through her all-female production company, The Aunties. It marks her first new music in five years, with select tracks serving as the backbone of the cinematic narrative.
By weaving together raw emotion, stunning visuals, and layered storytelling, Escape Room pushes the boundaries of what an album can be. It captures the full arc of human experience, offering audiences both a mirror for their own struggles and a space for collective healing.
