Sandy Ortega Finds His Calling Through New Spanish Guitar and EL TOQUE

Sandy Ortega ’s path to music wasn’t planned—it was discovered. Once on track to become a doctor, the New York-based guitarist found his true calling the moment Spanish guitar ignited something deeper within him. Eleven years later, Ortega has become a fixture in the city’s live circuit, driven by what he calls EL TOQUE—the elusive “Spanish touch” that defines his sound and spirit.

Rooted in early classical training, Ortega’s transformation came when he began infusing traditional pieces with Spanish emotion, inspired by legends like Andrés Segovia and composers such as Joaquín Malats. A spontaneous “Eureka” moment outside his apartment marked the beginning of his journey as a composer, one he’s pursued ever since with unwavering focus.

For Ortega, creativity flows through both discipline and release—stepping away from the guitar is just as vital as playing it. Beyond music, his Orthodox Christian faith anchors him, shaping both his life and art.

Now, Ortega is preparing for a new chapter: a collaboration with a professional dancer affiliated with Lincoln Center and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Set to debut in Greenwich Village, the performance promises a striking fusion of movement and Spanish guitar, bringing Ortega’s evolving vision to life.
