Conversation With Emerging DJ, Producer And Singer-Songwriter Cann Zeka
We were delighted to chat with emerging DJ and producer Cann Zeka, to understand more about his vision of music, as he releases his new single “Keep It Non-Stop,” a song raising questions about committing to someone and overcoming the hardships together, and following-up on his debut release “Mirror Mirror.”
Hi Cann! Can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? How did your passion for music start?
My name is Cann Zeka and I’m a Dj Producer. I grew up in Brussels (Belgium) where I’m still living. I’ve always been passionate about music since my early childhood. We had a piano in our family house and I used to reproduce the notes of my favorite songs for fun. That’s how I developed my musical ear and started composing my own music and growing my passion for music.
Congratulations on your debut song “Mirror Mirror”, we loved it! How did you come up with the idea to talk about your inner battle?
Thank you for the compliment, I’m happy you liked it.
Talking about inner battles felt like evidence to me. Each one of us is struggling with his/hers own issues, trying to figure things out. As the Yin Yang symbol illustrates the balance between attraction and repulsion, our journey is all about finding our personal balance to reach inner peace.
How did your interest in philosophy and spirituality begin? Any particular event that triggered it?
I’ve always been interested in anything related to philosophy and spirituality. I feel like it brings you more mind-openness and inner wealth.
In which genre do you feel the most comfortable? You have experimented with electronic dance music and Hip-Hop, what’s next?
I’m quite comfortable with pop and edm style but I don’t limit myself to this. I like discovering new music by exploring different genres which inspires me to create. Being a DJ producer also enables me to experiment and combine various music styles, which is great.
My new song is more leaning towards electro dance music but with a pop-inspired melody this time. It’s called Keep It Non-Stop. I hope you’ll like it.
Can you tell us a bit more about your music taste? What artist/song do you currently can’t stop listening to? Who is your biggest musical inspiration? Who would you like to collaborate with?
My taste in music is pretty eclectic. I can listen to « So What » by Miles Davis (which is my favorite song of his) and then switch to « Overprotected » of Britney Spears.
As long as the song sounds good to my ears, I like it. I don’t set myself any boundaries in terms of music. The artist I can’t stop listening to is definitely Michael Jackson.
In terms of producing music, I’m really inspired by Max Martin’s work. He’s versatile, creative and he always brings something new to his work. All these years, he’s been part of the top artists of this world. I also love The Neptunes and Dallas Austin.
I really like Major Lazor. The way he mixes different styles of music is incredible. Cashmere Cat is really talented in regards to production.
All the producers I mentioned are incredible and are a real source of inspiration for me. Halsey, Drake, Young Thug, Ariana Grande, J Balvin, ROSALÍA and many others are gifted artists. Collaborating with one of them would be a dream come true and could lead to an amazing experience.
What does your creative process look like, between the lyrics and the composition of the music?
I don’t follow any specific pattern regarding my creative process. Sometimes I find the melody first, then comes the story and the lyrics. Some other times it’s the other way around.
My creative process is not always the same, sometimes I find the melody or the lyrics or sometimes it’s by composing an instrumental that I find everything else. As many artists, it really depends on the inspiration I have at the very moment.
Are you more of a recording artist, or a performer, or both?
I’d say that I like both, each is a unique experience that makes you feel different sensations and emotions.
Are you planning any concerts/tours once our world gets back to a new normalcy?
With the current situation, there aren’t any concerts and tours planned yet. Hopefully, things will start moving as we will figure out our new normal.
I’m eager to perform on stage and
