Interview: Nigerian Superstar ZeXzy Shares Behind-The-Scenes Moments Of His New Banging Music Video “Obsession” Shoot
Who came-up with the concept behind your new music video for the successful single “Obsession”?
Well! The obsession video was conceptualized by me with the support of my team at Maple Grove Entertainment (MGE). We have loads of creatives down here who put heads together to come up with something novel that people would like. We knew it would be too banal to approach it from the regular angle of wearing bling bling and having all the girls going crazy. We thought “if we went the epic route it would intrigue people more”. So, we came up with the storyline of ZeXzy being the “God Of Obsession” who has been asleep since 519 BC, but somehow, a certain queen wanted to wake him up for herself alone. Unfortunately, ZeXzy starts to spread his hypnosis around the world like a virus and all the women just find themselves coming to the “ZeXzy Girls Club” and can’t seem to leave because they’ve been enchanted by ZeXzy.
Any fun behind-the-scenes moments while shooting the music video that you’d like to share with our audience?
Okay! I really had fun during the make-up section where I had to be tattooed and rubbed with oil. In addition to this, I found it amazing seeing those epic costumes look so great on camera; I had always imagined what they would look like on a big screen before the day of the shoot. When I wasn’t in front of the camera, I had the privilege of watching the dancers perform a dance routine I had taught them before the shooting began and just to see them do it so excellently was exciting to see. The numerous girls at the “ZeXzy Girls Club” was a very beautiful sight to behold too.
Are you more of a recording artist, a performer or both?
I would consider myself to be a recording artist and a performing act and this is because I enjoy doing both of them equally. When I write a song, I want it recorded and played back to me as soon as it’s possible, then the next would be to perform it in front of a live audience just to see how they would respond. So I do enjoy both parts of the creative process.
As an artist, what is your proudest moment or memory?
As an artist you are not really considered a big deal if your song is not on Satellite television stations yet. So my most-proud moment would be the first day my song aired on cable TV. This happened on the 9th of April, 2021 and the station was Urban TV. Later on, stations like: SoundCity, Hip TV and MTV followed. I felt such an adrenaline rush seeing a dream I have always had materialize.
What’s the first thing you notice when listening to a new song?
The first time I hear a song, it has to be the melody that catches my attention. If it is melodious and the artist is probably hurling insults at anyone who’s listening to the song, I would still have fun with it. For you to tickle my music fancy, then you have to give me a good melody.
Would you like to collaborate with other artists, if yes please give us your Top 3 dream collabs.
I would most definitely want to do collaborations with the A-listers in the game. In no particular order, I would love to work with the likes of: Drake, Adele and BTS.
Any upcoming plans for 2022 you’d like to share with our audience?
Yes! This year promises to be a bumper one for everybody tuned in to the ZeXzy channel. An “Obsession” Spanish remix is in the works and folks should look out for that one; it promises to be a bigger banger than the original. Also, a new single would be dropping sometime in October. Finally, a lot of unpredictable things are in the mix, which you guys are going to have to wait to see.
