On Sunday night, Andra Day becomes the second Black woman ever to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes. Day took home the trophy for her role as Billie Holiday in the Netflix film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
The first Black woman to win the ward was Whoopi Goldberg for her role in The Color Purple 35 years ago, Variety reports.
During the broadcast, Day was surprised to win the award, grabbing the speech from the person holding it to deliver it to the national audience.

Also nominated in the category were Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”).
