Blac Youngsta Explains Why He Became a Minister & The Secret Behind Memphis’ Success: Watch

Blac Youngsta is the latest guest to appear on Billboard's On the Block series, as he joined Carl Lamarre, Bianca Gracie and Trevor Anderson for a jampacked episode Tuesday (Jan. 21). The Memphis native dished on his city's winning streak in hip-hop, the inspiration behind his Church on Sunday album, becoming an ordained minister to marry one of his best friends behind bars, why he keeps a smile on his face at all times, and his top five of all-time.

"I named it that way because I feel like I put out playful music so much," he says of the project's title, which dropped in November. "At some point, you got to realize it's time to talk about something. You can do a lot of hype songs and chase a hit, but I did that for so long. I had to get back to what I came in on."

If Blac Youngsta believes you're in real love, he'll even come out to marry a couple and pay for all the expenses. Youngsta became an ordained minister to help out a friend who's serving a life sentence in prison. "I got a homeboy in jail and he wanted to marry his woman. I was going to go find someone to marry them and then thought, 'I don't got no bad background. I'm gonna do it myself,' he explains. "If it's real love, you can win a wedding from me. I'll marry y'all and pay for it."

With Memphis seeping into the mainstream, Blac Youngsta credits all the money coming in as to why the talent is finally cultivating. "Too many millionaires coming out the city," the CMG artist details. "It's cool when you see one or two, but when you see five, six, seven and eight, it's too many millionaires. Everyone's looking like, 'Where the f— they get the money from?' I love where the city's at right now — I love what Tay Keith is doing with the beats."

If you peep his Instagram, you'll often find the 29-year-old clowning, but there's a good reason for his antics. "Your smile determines how far you're going to go in life," he says as to why he's always joking around. "I realized then it's not always good not looking happy, you want to look happy every day. If you're smiling at all times, I'm gonna tell you anything. It's really important to smile."

After defending Eminem in a heated debate as to what constitutes someone being a real fan, Youngsta was pressured into listing off his own top five rappers of all time. Blac went with Boosie, Gucci Mane, his mentor Yo GottiJeezy and Tupac.
