Chance the Rapper Returns with Visionary New Album ‘Star Line’
After six years of evolution and reflection, Grammy-winning artist Chance the Rapper returns with Star Line, his long-anticipated second studio album. The 17-track project showcases Chance’s signature lyricism and daring sonic vision while grounding itself in themes of Black resilience, cultural legacy, and personal growth.
The album draws its name from Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line, connecting Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. That diasporic symbolism runs through the project, born from Chance’s travels to Ghana and Jamaica and his deepening engagement with global Black art. Yet it remains anchored in Chicago, weaving love for his hometown into every bar.
In songs like “No More Old Men,” Chance blends childhood memories with a meditation on mortality among Black men. On “Drapetomania” featuring Babychiefdoit, he transforms a racist historical term into a battle cry for liberation. “The Negro Problem,” with BJ the Chicago Kid, addresses the racial disparities in healthcare, particularly the risks faced by Black mothers.
The visuals are once again shaped by Brandon Breaux, the artist behind Chance’s earlier iconic covers. Executive produced by DexLvL, Star Line includes contributions from a wide-ranging cast of collaborators: Lil Wayne, Vic Mensa, Joey BadA$$, Smino, Jazmine Sullivan, Young Thug, Jamila Woods, Jay Electronica, and more, with production support from Peter CottonTale, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, and Nico Segal.
“This album is a culmination of my travels, my experiences, and my deep dive into the history that connects us all,” Chance says. “From Chicago to Accra, this is my art, unfiltered. Star Line is a vessel for that story.”
The official video for “Just A Drop” premieres today at 12:00 PM ET.
