According to a report from NBC News, the family of 46-year-old George Floyd, who died at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, will be given a $27 million settlement in the wake of the trial of former officer Derek Chauvin.
Chauvin, who held his knee on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes until he died, is now facing third-degree murder charges and second-degree manslaughter charges in lieu of his trial, which is slated for March 29.
The settlement includes a $500K donation to build a Memoriam at the corner of 38th and Chicago Avenue, which is now known as George Floyd Square.
Benjamin Crump, who represents the Floyd family, stated, “The city needs to exhibit responsible leadership in the face of the horrific tragedy that really was a watershed moment for America.”
