Hole Taped ‘MTV Unplugged’ 25 Years Ago: Which Song Was the Best? Vote!
On Valentine’s Day 1995, Hole took to the stage at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and let it all out for the taping of their MTV Unplugged set. The performance came just 10 months after Kurt Cobain died by suicide, and included a cover of “You’ve Got No Right" — the last song that Nirvana recorded before his death, which was eventually as released as "You Know You're Right" in 2002 on the band's self-titled greatest hits set.
“All right, this is a song that Kurt wrote,” Love, who married Cobain in 1992, told the studio audience. “We can’t do it very well but we’ll try because it’s Valentine’s Day and maybe he can hear it, and he’ll go, ‘You know you’re f–king up my song, Courtney. Don’t even try it.’ But if it works, then it’s dedicated to my mother-in-law.”
The performance aired on April 17, 1995, a little over a year after the release of Hole’s second studio album, Live Through This. Several of the songs from that record landed on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, including “Doll Parts” at No. 4, “Miss World” at No. 13, “Violet” at No. 29, and “Asking for It” at No. 36. The Unplugged set also included covers of Carole King’s “He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss)” and Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf.”
