The Macys’ fourth of July fireworks show will go on as usual with an interesting twist. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced today that the firework show will go on.

The Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks shows will take place over several nights across the five boroughs to decrease crowding amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, said the mayor.

“These past few months have been some of the most difficult in our city’s history, and New Yorkers are looking for a break,” de Blasio said in a statement. “This 4th of July Celebration with Macy’s will give all New Yorkers a safe and exciting way to enjoy the holiday together, even when we are apart.”

Shows are slated to take place between June 29 and July 1 with a July 4 grand finale at the Empire State Building that will air on NBC with a performance by John Legend.

According to Macy’s, this year’s fireworks will feature a musical score that’s “a mix of pop and patriotic anthems celebrating New York City’s resilience during the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Aside from Legend, the finale will feature Mayo Clinic surgeon Dr. Elvis and Alicia Keys, who will perform salutes to front line workers.

While COVID-19 may have ruined Macy’s original plan, keeping the fireworks show in five separate settings is a solid backup plan.
