Salt-N-Pepa Celebrate 35 Years of ‘Blacks’ Magic’ During Women’s History Month

In honor of Women’s History Month, Grammy-winning hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa are celebrating the 35th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Blacks’ Magic. Originally released in 1990, the record became a defining moment for the group and the genre, blending bold lyricism with cultural commentary and messages of empowerment that still resonate today.

Blacks’ Magic produced five impactful singles — “Expression,” “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “Independent,” “You Showed Me,” and “Do You Want Me” — each carrying powerful themes around self-expression, independence, relationships, and social awareness. Cheryl “Salt” James made history by producing the platinum-selling lead single “Expression,” becoming the first female MC to produce her own platinum record. She also helmed the production of “Independent,” an anthem still widely praised for its declaration of self-sufficiency.

Blacks’ Magic was about creating something meaningful that spoke to who we were as women, as artists, and as Black voices,” said Salt. “It was empowering to produce tracks that encouraged self-love and boldness.”

Sandra “Pepa” Denton’s presence helped amplify the duo’s fearless image and empowering voice. “We didn’t shy away from topics people thought were taboo,” said Pepa. “We wanted to educate, uplift, and make people feel good.”

Salt-N-Pepa’s influence spans decades. With over 15 million records sold, they became the first female rap group to go gold and platinum, win a Grammy, and earn global recognition. Recent milestones include a 2022 Hollywood Walk of Fame star and performances at the GRAMMYs’ Hip-Hop 50 Tribute and Essence Festival.
