Standing on the shoulders of giants. In 1920, 100 years ago, a group of 8 black baseball owners came together to forge a future for their community that would have long lasting and far reaching impact. From this meeting came the birth of the National Negro League – the first successful, organized professional Black Baseball League. Their passion for the game was boundless and they were not going to wait for change. We collaborated with World Series champion, Cy Young Award winner and one of the famed ‘Black Aces’, @cc_sabathia, to bring this powerful tribute to life. CC coordinated the program and acted as Creative Director. We also proudly partnered with the Major League Baseball Players Association (@mlb_players) and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (@nlbmprez) to make this collection come to life. A portion of proceeds from all sales will benefit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum’s efforts to preserve and celebrate the rich history of African American baseball and its significance in the social advancement of America at large. As well, Roots of Fight will be donating a portion of sales from this program and their entire site to the NAACP, Black Lives Matter and other initiatives to help fight racial inequality and injustice. ROF has committed a minimum of $50,000 for 2020 to these causes. Furthermore, when legendary former players are featured in the collection, a portion of proceeds will also go directly to them or their estates. We designed and curated the collection to pay respect to this important history and highlight the pioneers who wrote it. This first capsule of the collection will pay tribute to the NLBM’s Centennial, as well as the life and legacy of baseball’s beloved Jackie Robinson, who famously broke the color barrier in 1947.
