SOURCE SPORTS: Pistons Hire Troy Weaver as First Black General Manager

The Detroit Pistons’ search for a new general manger is finally over.

Troy Weaver was finalizing a deal on Thursday to become the GM of the Pistons, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports. Weaver becomes the 9th African American GM currently in the league.

Weaver was previously the vice president of basketball operations with the Oklahoma City Thunder and worked for the team since 2008.

“It’s an honor for me to join a franchise with the history and tradition of the Detroit Pistons,” Weaver said in a statement. “I’m excited about the challenge of building this team into a consistent winner and assembling the pieces to compete at a very high level. We’ll get to work right away, evaluating opportunities, and installing systems that will make us all successful.”

Weaver becomes the first black GM in the Pistons’ history. He has an excellent track record for scouting talent. While with the Thunder, he was the one who scouted Russell Westbrook, who went on to win NBA MVP honors.

The Pistons are in a total rebuild mode. Having a strong front office leader like Weaver is a start in the right direction.
