The Ruler Returns: Slick Rick Announces First Album in Over 25 Years, ‘Victory’
Hip-hop royalty Slick Rick is back. The legendary storyteller and cultural icon has announced Victory, his first new album in more than 25 years — a bold, genre-bending visual project set to release on June 13 via Idris Elba’s 7Wallace label in partnership with Mass Appeal.
Executive produced by Elba and Ricky Walters (aka Slick Rick), Victory marks a triumphant return for The Ruler, blending lyrical mastery with cinematic storytelling. The album features appearances by Nas, UK rap heavyweight Giggs, and singer Estelle, and is accompanied by a 30-minute film directed by Meji Alabi, best known for his work on Beyoncé’s Black Is King.
“Victory is all about perseverance, storytelling, imagination and evolution. A visual blend of art and heart — a sonic journey that reflects where I’ve been and where I’m going. Victory isn’t just music — it’s a bold in your face statement, showcasing British artistry at its finest!”
– Slick Rick

“Working with Slick Rick… back home in the UK, and then offering the world of hip hop something amazing has been a blessing. It’s literally a gift!”
– Idris Elba
“Slick Rick and I have a long history of working together so it was great to get back in the studio with him to create this new record. He has been such an influential figure in Hip Hop culture and I look forward to him sharing this project with the next generation of fans.”

Filmed across the U.S., UK, and Africa, the film brings Slick Rick’s vivid vision to life with immersive visuals and global storytelling. It debuts June 7 at the inaugural SXSW London, followed by a conversation with Slick Rick, Idris Elba, and Alabi. A U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Festival follows on June 13.
The project has been four years in the making, recorded between London and France, and visually styled by legendary photographer Jonathan Mannion and Equator Studios. The music was mixed by Young Guru, with artwork by British agency PAQ and Rick’s own creative team.
Victory drops worldwide June 13. The film will stream globally the same day, with platform details to follow. Available on all DSPs and for purchase, Victory is more than an album — it’s a cinematic movement, a cultural celebration, and a long-awaited return from one of hip-hop’s greatest voices.
