When President Trump says “kung flu” in reference to COVID-19, apparently it’s ok. At least, that’s the message the White House is sending.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany stood before the press on Monday (June 22) and defended the latest statements from Trump, this time after his lackluster rally in Oklahoma.
“The President doesn’t,” McEnany opened, CNN reports. “What the President does do is point to the fact that the origin of the virus is China. It’s a fair thing to point out(.)”
McEnany was challenged by CBS reporter Weijia Jiang about the term but she continued to associate the president’s use of the term with China as a place of origin. Jiang highlighted the use of the term back in March, revealing it was said directly to her by a White House official. White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said the term was “highly offensive.”
When presented with the concept of the term being offensive by Conway, McEnany stood firm in “The President does not believe that it’s offensive to note that this virus came from China (.)”
During her time in front of the press McEnany also dismissed the idea that the Asian American community was offended, stating the virus is not their fault and “they’re amazing people.”
