Watch Tool Perform 15-Minute Epic ‘7empest’ Live For the First Time
The track won the Grammy for best metal performance last month.
When Tool broke the record for longest song to crack the Hot 100 last year, 10-minute single "Fear Inoculum" wasn't even the longest song on their long-awaited studio album.
That honor went to Fear Inoculum's penultimate track, the tantalizing "7empest," with a runtime of 15 minutes and 44 seconds. The alt-metal veterans have been touring behind the new LP since October, but didn't introduce the sleeping giant to their setlist until last night (Feb. 18) in Sydney, Australia.
Tool has outlawed photos, cell phone use, and filming of any kind through most of their current tour, but as Loudwire points out, a couple of fans were able to grab footage of the "7empest" debut. Drummer Danny Carey sounds an entire army of drummers throughout and the instrumental heroics of guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Justin Chancellor provide ample texture and power.
The first video opens around the song's two-minute mark, where Maynard James Keenan's vocals first enter, and continues to around the song's midway point. The second video picks up near the same spot and continues through to the end. Listen 'til the very end for a little added quip from MJK.
Tool will be back in the U.S. for a handful of northwestern tour dates in mid-March, with a headlining slot at Bonnaroo — its lone 2020 festival so far — also looming. TIme will tell if the "7empest" appearance wil amount to a rare cameo or a new staple in Tool setlists.
